In a move to revive the charm of print media, The Ivy Bookshop is set to open a pop-up newsstand at Mount Vernon Place Church during the Charles Street Promenade on June 6. This initiative comes as a response to the recent cessation of newspaper and magazine sales at the Newsstand at Penn Station, leaving a void for those who appreciate the tactile experience of reading printed news.
A Community Initiative
The Ivy Newsstand will be part of the Ivy Bookshop’s temporary satellite location at Mount Vernon Place Church, which is open until June 14. This effort is supported by UNITE Mount Vernon, a non-profit organization dedicated to restoring the church and transforming it into a vibrant community hub. The newsstand aims to bring people together in a shared experience of reading and enjoying coffee, reminiscent of simpler times when communal newspaper reading was a daily ritual.
The newsstand will offer a selection of publications, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Baltimore Sun, along with coffee and pastries. The Ivy Bookshop, owned by Emma Snyder, is located at 5928 Falls Road, and its Mount Vernon satellite operates from Thursday to Sunday, noon to 6 p.m.
Charles Street Promenade
The Charles Street Promenade is a pedestrian-friendly event where Charles Street will be closed to vehicular traffic from Saratoga Street to North Avenue, allowing visitors to shop, dine, and explore freely. The Promenade will run from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., with an After-Party in the Station North Arts District from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. The Ivy Newsstand will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the day of the event.
Nancy Chambers, a bookseller at The Ivy Bookshop, mentioned that the newsstand’s future operations depend on the community’s response during the Promenade. This initiative not only supports local businesses but also fosters a sense of community and nostalgia for the printed word.
