The city of Mount Shasta, located an hour north of Redding, has made significant changes to its top personnel. The city council recently placed Todd Juhasz, the city manager, on paid administrative leave pending further review. The council also released John Kenny, the previous city attorney, and approved a contract with a new legal firm, Colantuono, Highsmith & Whatley, PC, for legal services.
Data Center Concerns
The changes come amid ongoing public controversy regarding a data center inquiry. An unnamed entity, later revealed to be Dunlieh Infrastructure Group, a digital infrastructure developer, had expressed interest in developing a data center project in the area. The company is interested in utilizing the former Crystal Geyser bottling site, which is currently for sale and located on unincorporated land that straddles the city of Mount Shasta and an unincorporated area of Siskiyou County.
Many community members have voiced concerns about the potential data center, citing concerns about the impact on the area’s clear water. Both Mount Shasta city officials and Siskiyou County supervisors have noted that they are not interested in a data center being built, while attempting to reduce community fears. The city has also noted that the site could potentially be annexed into the city, which would provide more control over the land.
To temporarily replace Juhasz, the council appointed Kim Fowler, the current planning director, as acting city manager. The city provided no explanation for Juhasz’s leave or the change in legal representation, citing personnel matters.
Community Response
Community members showed up to the city council meeting to voice their concerns about the potential data center and offer alternative ideas for the former Crystal Geyser facility. Council member Tessa Clure responded with enthusiasm, noting that residents have the power to shape the city’s decisions and encouraged them to continue voicing their concerns and organizing initiatives.
