Moscow School District Eyes New Middle School

The Moscow School District is considering a plan to create a new middle school and convert its existing middle school into a high school. Trustees are set to hold an Aug. 7 board workshop to discuss running a bond or plant-facility levy this fall to pay for upgrades.

New Middle School Proposal

Lombard Conrad Architects presented a concept for a new middle school, which would be located on Oylear Field across the street from the district’s current middle school. The new school would feature a central commons/cafeteria space with a large library that includes a studio for creative projects.

The project would require redesigned traffic flows and feature new outdoor space. The cost is estimated at $67.5 million, but that would rise with inflation the longer trustees discuss the project.

Converted High School

Knit Architects created a concept for converting the existing middle school into a high school. There would be three new additions to the school: an auditorium, career-technical classrooms, and a commons area. Existing classrooms would get new carpet, paint, and flooring along with a new HVAC system and other behind-the-scenes upgrades.

Moscow Superintendent Shawn Tiegs noted that the upgrades would help the district expand medical arts, agriculture, and business programs with the high school and middle school upgrades. The total cost for both schools would reach about $127 million.

Tiegs highlighted other long-term facility needs in a presentation to the board on July 22. The district hopes to address these needs through the proposed upgrades.
