Moore County Holds Meeting on Flock Surveillance Cameras

Moore County commissioners will hold a special meeting on Monday to discuss Flock surveillance cameras, which have raised concerns about privacy and potential misuse. The meeting, open to the public, will be held at 4 p.m. in the Grand Hall of the Moore County Senior Enrichment Center in West End.

Concerns and Controversy

The Moore County Sheriff’s Office will present information on the Flock cameras, which are automatic license plate readers designed to help police locate missing people, identify stolen vehicles, and track suspects in criminal investigations. Critics, however, have expressed concerns about how broadly the data can be searched and whether officers have enough oversight when accessing it.

Two North Carolina officers were accused of using the cameras to stalk people, highlighting the need for strict guidelines and monitoring. Flock Safety, the company behind the cameras, claims that the devices do not provide live video, cannot record conversations or transcribe spoken words, and instead capture short recordings and still images.

The company also assures that it will not sell its data to third parties, add facial recognition to the system, or weaponize its drones. Despite these assurances, many people remain concerned about the potential for abuse and the impact on individual privacy.
