Amtrak has completed the rehabilitation of East River Tunnel Line 2, a major rail link in the Northeast Corridor. The tunnel, which carries over 450 daily trains, was damaged during Superstorm Sandy in 2012.
Rehabilitation Project
The year-long project involved stripping the tunnel down to its concrete liner and reconstructing key systems. The work was done to improve reliability and safety for the hundreds of thousands of passengers who use the corridor daily.
The tunnel closure had caused service challenges for commuters, including a track fire that disrupted rail service into Penn Station in May. The rehabilitation project began in May 2025 and was completed on schedule.
