Montgomery County Police Disband Alcohol Enforcement Unit Amid Staffing Shortage

Montgomery County, Maryland – The Montgomery County Police Department announced it will dissolve its dedicated Alcohol Initiatives Unit. The decision stems from a recent decline in sworn officer staffing and the department’s need to realign resources to meet broader operational demands.

Reallocation of Personnel

In a statement released by the department, officials said the officers formerly assigned to the Alcohol Initiatives Unit will be reassigned to fill vacant positions across several critical areas, including the centralized traffic division, the crisis response and support unit, and the school resources unit. The move is intended to ensure that the department maintains robust coverage despite the staffing shortfall.

Commitment to Impaired‑Driving Enforcement

Assistant Chief David McBain emphasized that the department remains committed to combating impaired driving, a persistent safety concern for Montgomery County residents. “We recognize the impact that impaired driving has on our community and the importance of alcohol enforcement,” McBain said. He added that the department will continue to operate the Holiday Alcohol Task Force and the Summer Alcohol Task Force, as well as conduct frequent saturation checkpoints staffed by Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) officers and regional partners.

Operational Context

The dissolution of the unit reflects a broader trend in law‑enforcement agencies adjusting to budgetary constraints and personnel shortages. By integrating the unit’s officers into existing divisions, the department aims to preserve its ability to respond swiftly to traffic incidents, provide crisis assistance, and support school safety initiatives while still targeting impaired‑driving offenses through targeted operations.

Community Impact

Local leaders and community members have expressed mixed reactions. Some residents appreciate the department’s effort to maintain enforcement presence through task forces and checkpoints, while others worry that the loss of a dedicated unit could reduce the overall focus on alcohol‑related violations. The department has invited public feedback and plans to monitor the effectiveness of its new deployment strategy.

Looking Ahead

Montgomery County officials will continue to assess staffing levels and resource allocation throughout the fiscal year. The police department has pledged transparency in reporting the outcomes of its ongoing alcohol‑enforcement initiatives and will adjust its approach as needed to protect public safety.
