Monroe Sheriff Urges Lawmakers to Honor Fallen Officer with Highway Renaming

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is rallying support for a legislative effort to rename a portion of M-50 in honor of Officer Darrian Young, an animal control officer tragically killed by a drunk driver in 2020. Sheriff Troy Goodnough has made a public appeal to Michigan residents and state officials to help push through the stalled Senate Bill 69, which aims to designate the stretch of road between Raisinville and Herr roads as the ‘Animal Control Officer Darrian Young Memorial Highway.’

Community and Legislative Efforts

Following Officer Young’s untimely death, her family and the local community have been advocating for this tribute. Sheriff Goodnough highlighted the swift fundraising efforts that covered the costs for the highway signage, demonstrating strong local support. Despite these efforts, the bill, sponsored by Sen. Joe Bellino, has repeatedly failed to pass the House committee, even though it imposes no financial burden on state or local governments.

Goodnough shared his ongoing communication with Young’s grandmother, who remains hopeful that the memorial will be realized within her lifetime. The sheriff has urged Monroe County residents and others across Michigan to contact their local representatives to express support for the bill, emphasizing the importance of honoring Young’s service and sacrifice.

Call to Action

In a video message posted on social media, Sheriff Goodnough expressed frustration over the legislative delays, noting that while his office frequently assists elected officials with constituent issues, this straightforward request has yet to be fulfilled. He encouraged community members to take action and help bring this memorial to fruition, underscoring the significance of recognizing those who serve and protect the community.

The push to rename the highway is not just a matter of honoring Officer Young’s memory but also a reflection of the community’s values and its commitment to acknowledging the sacrifices made by public servants. As the legislative process continues, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office remains hopeful that state lawmakers will heed the call and approve the renaming of M-50.
