Monroe County has decided to cancel its contract with Flock Safety, a company that provides license plate reading cameras, due to concerns over privacy. The cameras, which automatically take photos of vehicles and license plates, will be removed from both Monroe County and the City of Bloomington.
Privacy Concerns
The decision to end the contract was made after concerns were raised about the potential for mass surveillance and the risk of license plate information and vehicle locations being accessed by outside law enforcement agencies, including federal officials. Monroe County Commissioner Jody Madeira stated that the local government should not collect information it cannot confidently govern.
The opposition to Flock cameras has come from both sides of the political spectrum, with some arguing that the cameras violate individuals’ Fourth Amendment rights. However, many law enforcement agencies have praised the technology, saying it has helped solve crimes and respond to emergencies.
The City of Fort Wayne is still debating whether to renew its contract with Flock, with the decision having been delayed multiple times due to significant public backlash.
