Molly’s House, a nonprofit that offers affordable, temporary housing to patients and families traveling for medical treatment, marked its 30th anniversary.
A Dream Fulfilled
The home was created to honor Molly Sharkey, who passed away at age 18 in 1992 after a battle with a rare form of leukemia. Before her death, Molly asked her family to give back to other families facing similar hardships. “She wanted a home away from home for families in need,” said Kevin Sharkey, Molly’s father, during the celebration.
On September 21, 1996 – what would have been Molly’s 23rd birthday – the first doors opened in Stuart. The original vision was simple: provide clean, safe lodging at a low cost, reminiscent of the Ronald McDonald House model. “It was $30 a night, and the sense of community was immediate,” Sharkey recalled.
What Molly’s House Offers
Today the facility boasts 14 guest bedrooms. Executive Director Katie Bartlett explained that families stay anywhere from a single night to several months, depending on treatment needs. “We’re not just offering a place to sleep; we’re fostering a supportive community. Families cook together, share stories, and lean on each other during difficult times,” she said.
Since opening, Molly’s House has welcomed families from across the United States and abroad, providing a stable base while they seek care at nearby hospitals. The nonprofit relies on donations, volunteer labor, and in‑kind contributions to keep rates low and services free for those who qualify.
Celebrating Three Decades of Service
The anniversary event honored the many volunteers, donors, and contractors who helped bring Molly’s vision to life. Sharkey highlighted a particular detail that Molly had imagined: a window seat where she could hold her cat and watch the world outside. “She never got to sit there, but her wish lives on in every room,” he said, gesturing to the bright, welcoming space.
