Moeller Crusaders vs. St. Xavier Bombers: Week 5 GCL Showdown Preview

On Saturday night, September 18, the Moeller Crusaders (2‑2) will face the St. Xavier Bombers (2‑2) at RDI Stadium and Ballaban Field on the St. Xavier campus in Cincinnati. The matchup pits the No. 4 Crusaders against the No. 5 Bombers in what is the first Greater Catholic League (GCL) contest of the season for each program.

Offensive weapons to watch

Moeller relies on a two‑quarterback system. Junior Nick Monserez has thrown for 440 yards this season, completing 50.7 % of his passes with two touchdowns and two interceptions, while also adding 124 rushing yards and three scores. Sophomore Hunter McLaughlin, the fifth‑leading passer in the GCL, boasts a 72 % completion rate for 182 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions.

Running back Juice Glover‑Brown contributes 439 yards on 64 carries and five touchdowns. Senior wideout Reggie Watson, the conference’s second‑leading receiver, has 20 catches for 270 yards and two scores, earning Division I All‑Ohio Second Team honors last year.

St. Xavier’s offense is anchored by senior dual‑threat quarterback Aidan Newdigate, who is 33‑of‑62 for 410 yards, five touchdowns and five picks. He also rushes 85 times for 446 yards and five scores. His favorite target, senior receiver Logan Von Holle, has 14 receptions for 252 yards and five touchdowns. Junior running back Aidan Graham adds 225 rushing yards on 35 carries and 108 receiving yards.

Defensive standouts

Moeller’s defense is led by senior linebacker Andrew Stofko (18 tackles, 2.5 TFL) and sophomore defensive back Mason Tate, who has already recorded three interceptions.

St. Xavier counters with junior linebacker Griffin Lyons, a second‑team All‑GCL selection as a sophomore, who has amassed 37 tackles, two sacks and five tackles for loss. Junior defensive back Graham Uran adds 34 tackles, 1.5 sacks and 2.5 tackles for loss.

Team trends and statistical snapshot

Moeller has struggled to stay above .500, a rarity for the program. After an opening loss to No. 1 Princeton (their first defeat to the Vikings in 35 years), the Crusaders rebounded with a 45‑7 win over Groveport Madison, fell 31‑14 to Louisville Trinity, and then posted a 42‑14 victory over Christ Presbyterian Academy of Tennessee. Their offense averages 356 yards per game (second in the GCL) and 43.5 points in wins, while allowing 252.3 yards and 31 points per game in losses.

St. Xavier mirrors Moeller’s inconsistency, opening with a 20‑7 loss to Lakota West, then beating Wayne 35‑7, losing to Indianapolis Cathedral 30‑21, and shutting out Westerville North 31‑0. The Bombers average 291.5 yards and 23.5 points per game offensively, but their defense is stout, allowing only 261.5 yards and 14.3 points per game and ranking second in the conference with five interceptions.

Keys to victory

Moeller must contain St. Xavier’s ground game. The Crusaders lead the GCL in run defense, limiting opponents to 80.8 yards per game, while the Bombers average 189 rushing yards. Forcing Newdigate to rely on his arm could expose his tendency toward turnovers, as all five of his interceptions have come in losses.

St. Xavier’s path to success lies in establishing the run. If the Bombers can generate consistent rushing yards, they will open up play‑action opportunities for Newdigate and keep the Moeller defense off balance. Although the Crusaders have surrendered an average of 155 rushing yards in their two defeats, limiting those gains will be critical.

Coaching experience

Moeller is guided by Bert Bathiany, now in his third year at the helm (34‑13 record at Moeller, 45‑17 overall). St. Xavier’s veteran coach Steve Specht brings 22 years of leadership (199‑82 record both at the school and overall).

Prediction

Both squads possess strong traditions and talented rosters. The game is expected to be close, with a projected final score of St. Xavier 28, Moeller 24.
