Sally Field honors Dolly Parton, recalling their Walmart trips during Emmy win

At the 78th Annual Emmy Awards on Monday night, veteran actress Sally Field was honored with the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for her role in Netflix’s “Remarkably Bright Creatures.” While accepting the trophy, Field took a moment to remember her longtime friend, the late country‑music legend Dolly Parton, who passed away on August 25, 2026.

Friendship forged on a classic film

Field and Parton first met while filming the beloved 1989 movie “Steel Magnolias,” a project that also featured Julia Roberts, Daryl Hannah, Shirley MacLaine and Olympia Dukakis. The two women quickly became close, bonding over the challenges of the acting profession and the simple pleasures of everyday life.

Walmart trips become treasured memories

In an interview with Fox News Digital after the ceremony, Field recalled how she and Parton would drive long distances to visit their local Walmart together. “She was a friend. I admired her. I loved working with her. I never stopped loving her,” Field said. “We would go shopping together, all of us, and go to Walmart together. Can you imagine all of us coming into Walmart? And it never leaves your soul.”

Field explained that the distance between their homes often made it difficult to meet, but the moments they did share left a lasting impression. “Dolly and I live so far apart we can never make ends meet, we could never find a way, but I never stopped feeling that way about her and the times we did reach out I think she felt that way about me. I loved her,” she added.

Parton’s legacy remembered

Following Parton’s death, Field posted a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, sharing a photo of the “Steel Magnolias” cast and writing, “If there are truly angels on earth, then we have just lost one. Dolly Parton. There will never be another. I adored her with all my heart and will always cherish our time together. Forever. Rest in peace beautiful Dolly.”

Field’s remarks highlighted not only the personal loss felt by many who admired Parton’s music and generosity, but also the enduring power of friendship among women in the entertainment industry.

Emmy win marks another milestone

The Emmy award adds a fourth win to Field’s distinguished career, underscoring her continued relevance and talent in a rapidly changing industry. While celebrating her own achievement, she chose to honor the memory of a fellow artist whose influence extended far beyond the stage and studio.

Field’s tribute serves as a reminder that, even amid the glitz of Hollywood, simple moments—like a shared trip to Walmart—can forge bonds that last a lifetime.
