MOCA Tucson launches rotating Fourth Wall mural series with Arturo Herrera

The Museum of Contemporary Art Tucson (MOCA) is turning its downtown façade into a living gallery. Starting Sept. 26, 2026, the museum’s exterior wall on Church Avenue will display a large‑scale mural by Venezuelan‑born artist Arturo Herrera, the first installment of the museum’s “Fourth Wall Series of Murals.”

Artist and vision

Herrera, a celebrated painter and sculptor whose work appears in major institutions such as The Met, MoMA, the Art Institute of Chicago, Museo Reina Sofía and Tate Modern, describes the project as an opportunity to experience the border and desert landscape he has long admired from afar. He will use a palette dominated by blue and green—colors he says have “almost universal familiarity”—to bring vitality to a wall he calls “a little dead, forgotten.”

Rotating public art

The Fourth Wall Series will feature six artists over the next two years, each creating a temporary mural that will be replaced after a set period. Herrera’s piece will remain on view until March 26, 2027, after which the wall will be refreshed with new commissions by Magali Lara, Eamon Ore Girón, Olivier Mosset and additional artists yet to be announced.

MOCA Executive Director Gabriela Rangel, who organized the exhibit with Wesley Creigh, emphasizes that the rotating format keeps the museum’s exterior a dynamic conversation piece for pedestrians and drivers alike. “It’s about giving vitality to that wall that was a little dead, forgotten,” Herrera said.

Community impact

Local residents will encounter the mural daily—morning, midday and night—adding a fresh visual dialogue to Tucson’s vibrant street art scene. Herrera notes that while many murals in the city address social justice, his abstract work offers a different, open‑ended perspective that invites multiple interpretations, from natural scenery to popular‑culture references.

MOCA’s rotating mural program aims to become a tradition, providing a platform for diverse artistic voices and enriching Tucson’s cultural landscape.

Visitor information

The museum is located at 265 S. Church Ave., Tucson. General admission is $10; seniors, students and military personnel pay $5, and youth enter free. Admission is free on Sundays.
