Mo Ivory elected Fulton County commission chair, pledges transparency and community focus

Fulton County voters delivered a decisive victory on Tuesday, electing Mo Ivory as the new chair of the Board of Commissioners. Ivory captured 75% of the vote, defeating Republican challenger Eric Tatum and making history as the first Black woman and first Latina to lead the commission.

Election results and historic context

Ivory’s win was part of a broader sweep for Black women across Georgia. Governor‑elect Keisha Lance Bottoms became the nation’s first Black woman governor, while Penny Brown Reynolds and Tanya Miller secured the secretary of state and attorney general posts, respectively. Ivory said the electorate’s message was clear: “They trust Black women.”

Commitment to all residents

Echoing Bottoms’ pledge to represent every Georgian, Ivory promised to serve all Fulton County residents, including those who did not vote for her. She toured the county—from Chattahoochee Hills in South Fulton to Mountain Park in the north—listening to neighborhood concerns and emphasizing the need for residents to understand county services.

“The voters deserve results from us,” Ivory said. “People participated in this election to say, ‘I matter where I am.’”

Four priority areas

Ivory outlined four focus areas for her term: the jail and courts, hospitals and healthcare, the elections process, and budget transparency. Her first step will be to assess the pending sale of the Atlanta City Detention Center to Fulton County and to meet with Sheriff Patrick Labat and officials from the district attorney’s, solicitor’s, and magistrate courts.

She noted that efficient court processing directly impacts jail populations and county budgeting, stating, “Fixing the jail means funding the courts.”

New commissioners and Democratic gains

The newly elected board includes several Democrats who unseated incumbents. In District 1, Maggie Goldman defeated Republican Bridget Thorne 57%‑43%, emphasizing accurate commercial property assessments to boost county revenue. In District 3, Jodi Merriday won 64% over Republican Paul Burton. District 5 saw Helen Zenobia Willis capture 94% of the vote against Tiffany A. Henyard.

Rohit Malhotra won a special election for the District 4 seat with 67% of the vote, allowing him to take office before the rest of the board convenes on Dec. 2.

Voices on the election’s broader meaning

During a board meeting, Vice Chair Khadijah Abdur‑Rahman described the results as a “referendum” on President Donald Trump, noting the importance of embracing America’s diversity. She added, “We are all creations of God, and I appreciate what everyone has to offer with open arms.”

Looking ahead

Ivory’s administration plans to prioritize transparency, ensuring that budget decisions and service delivery are clear to residents. By addressing court efficiency, healthcare access, election integrity, and fiscal openness, the new leadership aims to translate the electorate’s call for change into tangible results for Fulton County.
