Villanueva grew up 80 miles south of College Station at Paetow High School in Katy, where he helped the Panthers capture the 2021 Class 5A state title. His former high‑school teammate, Texas A&M linebacker and team captain Daymion Sanford, will line up opposite Villanueva in the 6 p.m. game broadcast on ESPN.
“I was excited to be named captain,” Villanueva said. “Getting to walk to the coin flip and look across at my old friend is really exciting. After limited playing time at the University of North Texas, Villanueva transferred to Jackson State, where he earned a more prominent role over two seasons before entering the portal again this year.
