Tasia Fortune, a 29-year-old Black woman and mother of four, was found hanging in the backyard of an abandoned house in Jackson, Mississippi. The circumstances surrounding her death are still under investigation.

Police have not indicated whether they consider Fortune’s death suspicious, saying only that they are actively working to determine the circumstances surrounding the death. A pink and white memorial honoring her life has been set up in the backyard where her body was found.
Fortune’s mother, Christy Spivey, told ABC News that she last saw her daughter on July 26 and described her as a loving mother who was not behaving out of the ordinary. Spivey also stated that she does not believe her daughter took her own life, saying, ‘She did not do this to herself. I know my daughter, and she did not do this to herself.’
Community Reaction
The case has drawn attention due to the recent hanging deaths of two other individuals in Mississippi, including 21-year-old Trey Reed and an unhoused white man in his 30s, Cory Zukatis. Bernice King, daughter of the late Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., has cautioned against rushing to conclusions while also acknowledging the fear and painful history that these circumstances evoke for Black communities in Mississippi.
