Minnesota Woman Released from ICE Detention Amid Medical Concerns

Andrea Pedro Francisco, a 23-year-old woman from Burnsville, Minnesota, has been released from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention in El Paso, Texas, after nearly four months. Her release comes as she requires surgery for a worsening ovarian cyst, a condition that had gone untreated during her detention.

Pedro Francisco, originally from Guatemala, was detained during Operation Metro Surge, a large-scale ICE operation in Minnesota that resulted in over 3,000 arrests. She was held in El Paso since February, despite her pressing medical needs. Her attorney, Ruby Powers, expressed relief at her release, noting that Pedro Francisco had been losing hope as her hearing was postponed until late July.

Senator Tina Smith of Minnesota played a role in advocating for Pedro Francisco’s release, contacting a senior Trump administration official to request her freedom. The release was unexpected, as previous requests for humanitarian parole and a habeas corpus petition had been denied.

Pedro Francisco’s case has drawn international attention, with human rights organizations like Amnesty International calling for her release. Her situation highlights ongoing concerns about the treatment of detainees with medical needs within the ICE system.

Now back in Minnesota, Pedro Francisco is preparing for the necessary medical treatment. Her release underscores the importance of community and governmental advocacy in addressing issues within immigration enforcement practices.
