Minnesota schoolchildren between the ages of four and 10 will have access to transgender dolls starting this fall as part of a taxpayer-funded development program supported by Gov. Tim Walz.
Program Details
The MyGenderDolls were developed in part through the University of Minnesota’s Early Innovation Fund and are designed for use by clinicians and educators. The dolls come with interchangeable accessories and removable and swappable genitalia to help children understand different options for their identity.
The project began as a research program in the University of Minnesota Medical School’s Department of Family Medicine and Community Health, led by faculty members Dianne Berg, PhD, and G. Nic Rider, PhD. The dolls are intended to help children develop tools to cope with societal messages that could lead to shame.
