A parasite outbreak in Michigan has sickened over 7,600 people and hospitalized 160, according to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. The outbreak is believed to be linked to contaminated lettuce or salad greens.
What is Cyclosporiasis?
Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal infection caused by the Cyclospora cayetanensis parasite. It can cause symptoms such as frequent watery diarrhea, and can be treated with antibiotics.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services recommends that residents take precautions when handling lettuce and salad greens, such as buying whole heads of lettuce instead of pre-washed, bagged lettuce or pre-made salad kits, and washing the leaves thoroughly under clean running water.
Cooking foods when possible, peeling produce with removable skins, and washing fresh fruits and vegetables under running water can also help reduce the risk of infection.
