Miami-Dade Sheriff Cordero‑Stutz to Brief Public on Deadly Amazon Cargo Jet Overrun

Miami‑Dade residents will receive the latest details on the Amazon cargo jet disaster during a press conference scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday, announced Sheriff Rosie Cordero‑Stutz. The briefing follows a weekend crash that sent a Boeing 767 cargo plane off the runway at Miami International Airport, killing five people and injuring five more.

What happened

According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the aircraft overran the runway by roughly 1,300 feet, breaching the paved surface and entering a service road used by warehouse workers. The plane struck a van owned by Professional Ocean Service Corp., a cleaning contractor, tearing the vehicle apart and killing all five occupants inside. An SUV outside airport property was also damaged, though officials have not released the number of occupants in that vehicle.

NTSB Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy described the scene as “utter devastation,” noting tire marks that stretched from the runway into the grass, shattered fencing, and scattered debris including air‑bag modules and airport equipment. She added that the crash produced a thick plume of black smoke that lingered over the airport for hours.

Investigation focus

Federal investigators are reviewing flight‑data recorder information to determine the aircraft’s speed, touchdown point, and braking performance. Early video footage shows the Boeing 767 remaining airborne well down the runway before finally touching down, prompting experts to question whether the pilots should have aborted the landing and attempted a go‑around.

Aviation safety specialist Steve Arroyo explained that a typical landing zone lies within the first 3,000 feet of a runway. If the jet touched down beyond that zone, standard procedure would call for an immediate abort. Former Transportation Department Inspector General Mary Schiavo added that the video appears to show the plane floating above the runway without the nose flaring, a condition that could be exacerbated by a tailwind.

Airport safety measures

Miami International Airport does not have an arresting system—beds of lightweight, crushable material installed at the end of runways to stop overrunning aircraft. The FAA reports that more than 120 U.S. airports have such systems, which have been credited with saving hundreds of lives. Miami‑Dade officials say the airport complies with safety regulations because it maintains a 1,000‑foot safety buffer beyond the runway end, a standard that exempts it from the arresting‑system requirement.

Impact on travel

The crash halted operations on two of the airport’s four runways for much of Sunday afternoon and continued to affect flights on Monday. Airport officials reported 160 cancellations and over 300 delayed flights on Sunday, with an additional 69 cancellations on Monday. Travelers were advised to check with airlines for updated schedules.

Community response

Amazon issued a statement expressing deep sorrow for the families of the five victims and pledged full cooperation with the investigation. “We’re heartbroken to learn that five people lost their lives in today’s incident at Miami International Airport,” the company said.

Sheriff Cordero‑Stutz emphasized the department’s commitment to supporting the victims’ families and ensuring a thorough investigation. “Our first priority is to provide answers and assistance to those affected,” she said, adding that the sheriff’s office will work closely with the NTSB, FAA, and local emergency responders.

What’s next

The NTSB plans to release additional findings on Tuesday, potentially including confirmed speed data from the flight recorder. Investigators will also examine the aircraft’s maintenance history, noting that the 32‑year‑old Boeing 767 was originally built for passenger service before being converted to cargo in 2015 and has previously been owned by foreign entities, including a Russian company.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and to attend the upcoming press conference for the most current information.
