Miami‑Dade Sheriff and Commissioner Oppose GTA VI County Branding Plan

Miami‑Dade County officials are weighing a promotional partnership with Rockstar Games for the November release of Grand Theft Auto VI. The proposal would see iconic county assets—such as the Metromover, public murals and even manhole covers—adorned with the game’s fictional “Vice City” branding.

County leaders tout the idea as a tourism boost, hoping to draw fans to real‑world locations that inspired the game’s setting, from Ocean Drive‑style streets to the Everglades. They argue the exposure could generate revenue and showcase Miami‑Dade to a massive global audience.

Sheriff and Commissioner Push Back

Sheriff Rosie Cordero‑Stutz and Commissioner Juan Carlos Bermudez issued a joint statement urging caution. They questioned whether the county should “promote a fictional depiction of Miami centered on crime, violence, and lawlessness.” The sheriff noted that the GTA franchise is built around criminal activity—including murder, robbery, drug trafficking, carjacking and violence against law enforcement—activities that Miami‑Dade deputies work daily to prevent.

“At a time when law enforcement is working every day to reduce violent crime, prevent robberies and car thefts, combat drug trafficking, and build stronger relationships between our deputies and the communities we serve, I believe we need to seriously consider the message we send when our own government promotes a fictional identity centered around many of those same crimes,” Cordero‑Stutz said.

Calls for Transparency and Fiscal Review

Commissioner Bermudez called for full transparency on any discussions with Rockstar Games and for a thorough analysis of public benefits versus costs. He expressed disbelief at the notion of temporarily rebranding key county assets, such as Miami International Airport, as “Vice City Airport.”

“Miami‑Dade County has spent decades building a reputation as a world‑class destination for tourism, business, investment, and opportunity. We should be promoting the Miami‑Dade we have worked so hard to build, not a fictional version of our community defined by crime and violence,” Bermudez added.

County’s Current Position

County officials confirmed they have held informal talks with Rockstar Games but have not reached any formal agreement or approved any branding plan. They maintain that the discussion remains exploratory, pending a detailed review of potential revenue, community impact and alignment with the county’s values.

The debate highlights a broader tension between leveraging pop‑culture phenomena for economic gain and preserving the community’s moral and public‑safety image. As the GTA VI launch approaches, Miami‑Dade leaders will need to balance tourism opportunities with the message they send about the county’s real identity.
