Mezzetta, the California‑based food brand, announced a recall of a single lot of its 32‑ounce Golden Greek Peperoncini after a TikTok user posted videos showing what appeared to be a dead mouse inside the jar. The videos, posted on September 16, quickly amassed over 680,000 views.
Recall details and distribution
The company has asked all retail partners, including H‑E‑B, Walmart, Target and Randalls locations throughout Texas, to remove the affected product from shelves. Online sales through Walmart, Target, Albertsons, Kroger and the Mezzetta website are also being halted.
In a statement released Saturday, Mezzetta said, “We immediately took action to identify where the product was distributed and worked with affected customers to isolate and remove it from sale. As our investigation continues, we’ll take other appropriate steps as needed.”
Consumer guidance
Consumers who have purchased the recalled peperoncini are instructed not to eat the product and to contact Mezzetta’s customer support at [email protected] for assistance.
Mezzetta emphasized that food safety remains its highest priority, noting that its facilities follow established programs for sanitation, pest control, product quality and traceability designed to protect products throughout production and distribution.
Regulatory involvement
The recall is being coordinated with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which oversees food safety incidents of this nature.
While the incident has raised concerns among shoppers, the swift recall and cooperation with federal regulators demonstrate a proactive approach to protecting consumers.
