Metro Red Line stations reopen as Purple Line construction nears completion

Washington commuters can look forward to the return of three key Red Line stations this week. The Bethesda, Medical Center and Grosvenor‑Strathmore stations, closed since early July for underground work tied to the new Purple Line, are slated to reopen on Monday, Sept. 7. At the same time, the temporary bus lanes that have been in place along Wisconsin Avenue are being pulled back as Labor Day approaches.

Construction progress and safety checks

Metro officials say the underground work at Bethesda is now at a stage where trains can safely pass through the station again. A new platform is being built to eventually link the Red Line station with the forthcoming Purple Line stop. Program Manager Jeanne Acquadro explained that engineers relied on 50‑year‑old drawings to guide the excavation, trusting that the geometry would line up within a few inches. “When you’re only two inches apart after blasting through rock 150‑200 feet deep, it’s a big win,” she said.

Remaining work and timeline

While the stations will reopen for passenger service, the full Purple Line connection will take another 18 months to finish. Metro estimates the overall Purple Line project is about 92 % complete, with light‑rail train testing already underway on roughly half of the 16‑mile alignment.

Cost and schedule benefits

Acquadro highlighted that shutting down the stations allowed crews to accomplish in 56 days what would otherwise have taken years, saving both time and taxpayer dollars. “Understanding the impact on our customers lets us see both the negative and the positive,” she noted, emphasizing that the rapid progress would have been impossible without the temporary closures.

What this means for riders

With the Red Line stations back in service, commuters will again have direct access to the Metro network while the Purple Line construction continues. The removal of the temporary bus lanes on Wisconsin Avenue should also improve traffic flow for drivers and pedestrians alike.

Metro’s ability to coordinate large‑scale underground work while keeping the broader system operational reflects a commitment to efficient public‑works delivery—an effort that supports families and neighborhoods that rely on reliable transit for work, school and worship.
