Metro Link Offers Free Rides for Kids to Summer Reading Programs in Rock Island County

In an effort to promote literacy and community engagement, Metro Link has teamed up with local libraries in Rock Island County, Illinois, to offer free rides for children participating in summer reading programs. This initiative is available for children aged four to 12, allowing them to use a valid library card as fare when traveling to and from library locations.

Participating Libraries and Programs

The libraries involved in this partnership include East Moline, Moline, Rock Island, and Silvis, each offering unique summer reading programs under the theme “Plant a Seed, Read.” The free fare program will run from June 1 to July 31, 2026, and requires children to be accompanied by a paying adult.

East Moline Public Library’s program, running from June 6 to July 31, includes a variety of events such as Touch-a-Truck, Family Tie Dye, and weekly storytimes in local parks. Moline Public Library offers activities like Life-Size Dinosaurs at the Library and a petting zoo from May 30 to July 25.

Rock Island Public Library will host over 100 free events, including crafts and reading challenges, from June 1 to July 31. Silvis Public Library’s program includes performances and activities like magic shows and science demonstrations, with prizes awarded at different stages of the program.

Access and Additional Information

Metro bus routes are conveniently located near each library, making it easier for families to participate. For those interested in obtaining or renewing a library card, information is available on each library’s website. This partnership not only encourages reading among young residents but also strengthens community ties by making library resources more accessible.
