Methodist Healthcare Ministries to Build Hotel

Methodist Healthcare Ministries, a faith-based health equity nonprofit, is taking a new approach to serving patients in the South Texas Medical Center. The organization is planning to build a 250-room hotel at the heart of the Medical Center this year, which will include discounted hotel rooms for low-income families visiting the area for medical care.

Ministry Park Development

The hotel is part of a future mixed-use development called Ministry Park, which aims to enhance the quality of life in the area. The development will be built on a 16-acre site between Wurzbach Road, Floyd Curl Drive, and Medical Drive, and will feature a dual-branded Hilton Garden Inn and Home 2 Suites by Hilton.

According to Chris Oviatt, president and CEO of MHM Realco, the hotel will divide its rooms between market rate options and discounted options for low-income families that need a place to stay. At least 15% of the rooms will be discounted for guests who qualify, with revenues from other rooms rented at market rates going back into the hotel to help pay for those discounts.

The development of Ministry Park is a complex process, but Oviatt hopes that construction will begin this year, with an eye on opening in late 2028 or early 2029. The project is expected to cost around $38 million.

Enhancing Healthcare

Oviatt believes that adding green spaces and improving the environment in the Medical Center will enhance healthcare. The South Texas Medical Center is a bustling area, and the organization wants to provide a peaceful space for patients, families, and healthcare workers to relax and rejuvenate.
