Meta has introduced a new tool, Muse Image, which allows users to create artificial intelligence content using publicly posted Instagram photos. The tool, rolled out on Tuesday, enables other users to pull “part or all of your published photos” to create new AI images, according to the company’s blog post.
Privacy Concerns
Users can tag a public Instagram account in the Meta AI app and direct the chatbot to create new AI photos based on photos from that person’s account. This has raised concerns among privacy advocates, who argue that the tool allows users to create photos or videos using another person’s likeness without their consent.
Taylor Lorenz, a journalist and author, expressed concerns about the tool, stating that it’s concerning because it allows users to create a photo or video using another person’s image without their consent and without any sort of notification. J.B. Branch, director of AI policy at Public Citizen, a nonprofit consumer advocacy organization, also criticized the tool, saying that it’s “really gross” that someone can take another person’s picture and doctor an AI-generated image of them.
Any adult with a public Instagram account was automatically opted in to the tool. Users can either set their account to private to protect their content or opt out by changing their account settings if they wish to remain public.
