Memorial Day Events in North Texas Honor Fallen Heroes

Communities across North Texas are preparing to honor the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives in service to the United States this Memorial Day weekend. This solemn occasion, originally known as Decoration Day, has evolved into a national day of remembrance for all who died in military service.

Local Tributes and Ceremonies

In a moving tribute, the Veterans Land Board will illuminate the headstones of servicemembers killed or missing in action at four Texas State Veterans Cemeteries. These cemeteries, located in Killeen, Abilene, Mission, and Corpus Christi, will remain open 24 hours a day from Friday, May 22, through Monday, May 25, allowing for nighttime viewing.

Texas Land Commissioner and Veterans Land Board Chairwoman Dawn Buckingham emphasized the significance of these tributes, stating, “Memorial Day weekend carries profound meaning for the families and communities whose loved ones made the ultimate sacrifice.”

Closer to home, North Texans are invited to participate in the annual Memorial Flag Placement at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery on Sunday, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Sponsored by the American Red Cross-Service to the Armed Forces North Texas Region, this event allows participants to pay their respects by placing flags at the graves of fallen soldiers.

Community Events in McKinney and Arlington

In McKinney, the annual Memorial Day Celebration will take place on Monday at 10 a.m. at Corporal RD Foster Veterans Memorial Park. Organized by the McKinney Armed Services Board in conjunction with the City of McKinney Parks & Recreation Department, the ceremony honors the service and sacrifices of military personnel and veterans from Collin County. This year, the event has been moved to Memorial Day itself and will proceed rain or shine.

Arlington’s National Medal of Honor Museum will host a four-day Memorial Day observance, featuring a “Field of Flags” display with over 600 flags representing Medal of Honor recipients killed in action. Visitors can dedicate a flag in honor of a loved one, with the display overlooking Mark Holtz Lake. The museum will also offer immersive exhibits, architecture tours, and a virtual reality experience simulating a Vietnam-era medical evacuation mission.

Carry the Load and Dallas Symphony Orchestra

Carry the Load, a nonprofit organization dedicated to honoring the sacrifices of the military, veterans, and first responders, will hold several events across North Texas, including in Allen, Waxahachie, Fort Worth, Rockwall, Flower Mound, and Dallas. The Dallas event at Reverchon Park will feature a memorial march, a silent midnight walk, and other activities.

The holiday weekend will conclude with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra’s annual Memorial Day concert at Flag Pole Hill. The free outdoor concert, beginning at 8:15 p.m., will feature patriotic music and a fireworks display at 9:15 p.m. In case of rain, the performance will move to the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center, though fireworks will be canceled.
