Historic Buda Train Depot Transforms into Business Incubator to Boost Local Economy

The historic train depot in Buda, Texas, is set to undergo a significant transformation, turning into a retail business incubator and community marketplace. This initiative, led by the Buda Economic Development Corp. (BEDC), aims to provide local entrepreneurs with affordable retail space, fostering business growth and enhancing the downtown economy.

Supporting Local Entrepreneurs

According to BEDC CEO Jennifer Storm, the program offers home-based businesses and startups the opportunity to establish a presence on Main Street at below-market rental rates. This initiative is designed to prepare business owners for transitioning to full-rent retail spaces, allowing them to test their products and grow their consumer base. Leases will be available for one to two years.

The retail incubator space will prioritize businesses that have completed or are enrolled in the Buda HIVE Cohort, a training program supporting local businesses. Storm emphasized the importance of providing business plans and financial documents to ensure success, with The Depot on Main offering a physical location for sales.

A Pathway to Growth

The depot project offers a structured growth path for business owners, described as a “crawl, walk, run” model. Initially, producers can sell products in The Collective Marketplace without a full-time commitment. Next, business owners can rent dedicated incubator space in the train depot for one to two years. Finally, after establishing a consumer base, they can move to a full-market-retail space.

Selected business owners will follow strict program timelines to prepare for transitioning to full-market-rate retail spaces. Storm noted that the short lease duration is intended to help businesses gain a solid footing quickly.

Community and Economic Impact

The city of Buda has partnered financially with the BEDC for this project, with City Manager Micah Grau highlighting the need for more retail and shopping opportunities to drive the downtown economy. Grau expressed optimism that the depot project will be a significant driver for economic growth in downtown Buda.

Following City Council approval in March, the project will launch in phases. Construction on the building’s interior is set to begin by the end of May, with exterior site work to follow. The project is expected to be substantially completed by the end of October and fully operational in the first quarter of 2027.
