Media and Service Members Briefly Detained at Vandenberg Space Force Base

On Monday, a convoy of invited journalists and two active‑duty service members was stopped at the main gate of Vandenberg Space Force Base, a federal installation on the central California coast near Santa Barbara. Security officers, believing the group to be unauthorized, ordered the vehicles to stop, drew firearms, sounded sirens and raised barricades.

Details of the detainment

The convoy, which included reporters from Noozhawk, KEYT, KSBY‑TV and the Santa Maria Times/Lompoc Record, was being escorted onto the base by uniformed public‑affairs staff in a government minivan. When the gate officers demanded the occupants exit the vehicles with their hands raised, the journalists and the two service members complied.

According to the local news outlets, the officers pointed guns at the group, activated the base’s alarm system and erected temporary barriers. The two military members – one enlisted and one junior officer – were handcuffed and placed in base vehicles. The civilian reporters were instructed to sit on a curb while the situation was assessed.

Duration and outcome

The detainment lasted a little over 30 minutes, causing the media team to miss the invitation‑only groundbreaking ceremony for a new missile‑operator training facility. After the review, all individuals were released without further incident and allowed to leave the base.

“We respect the military’s need to provide security for the base,” said Tom Bolton, editor‑in‑chief of Noozhawk. “But clearly what occurred was unfortunate and unnecessary, and potentially dangerous, as firearms were drawn.” Bolton indicated he hopes to discuss the incident with base leadership to prevent a repeat.

Base response

Space Launch Delta 30 Public Affairs issued a statement on Wednesday acknowledging the incident and promising a full review of media‑coordination procedures. The statement read, “Vandenberg takes both installation security and our responsibility to invited media seriously. The journalists involved were accessing the installation at our invitation, and the installation commander has ordered a full review of the media coordination processes.”

Officials emphasized that the base’s security protocols are designed to protect both personnel and critical assets, and that the mistaken identification of the convoy as gate‑crashers was an isolated error.

Context

The event was part of a broader effort to expand the base’s capabilities for missile‑operator training, a key component of national defense. While the incident drew local media attention, it also underscores the challenges of balancing stringent security measures with the need for transparent media access at federal facilities.
