Medal of Sacrifice Act Honors Fallen First Responders

In a significant move to honor the bravery and sacrifice of law enforcement officers and first responders, President Donald Trump has signed the Medal of Sacrifice Act into law. This legislation, introduced by Rep. Brian Mast, a Republican from Florida’s 21st congressional district, aims to recognize those who have tragically lost their lives while serving their communities.

A Local Initiative with National Impact

Rep. Mast, who represents St. Lucie and Martin counties, along with a portion of northern Palm Beach County, was inspired to propose this bill following the tragic deaths of three Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office motormen: Butch Waller, Dan Diaz, and Luis Paez. These officers lost their lives in a collision with an SUV on Southern Boulevard in November 2024. Their sacrifice highlighted the need for a formal recognition of the ultimate price paid by first responders.

The Medal of Sacrifice Act, also known as House Resolution 3497, establishes a new honor for law enforcement officers and first responders killed in the line of duty. The act ensures that the names of these fallen heroes will be honored and remembered by the President of the United States and a grateful nation. This commitment was underscored by Rep. Mast, who stated, “The highest office in our land has sworn to families of fallen officers or first responders: your loved one’s name will be honored and remembered by the President of the United States and a grateful nation.”

Inaugural Recognition

Before the act was officially signed into law, the families of Waller, Diaz, and Paez were invited to the White House in May 2025, where they received the inaugural awards. This gesture set a precedent for how the nation will honor the memory of those who protect and serve, ensuring their sacrifices are not forgotten.

Rep. Mast’s efforts, supported by President Trump, reflect a commitment to recognizing the critical role that first responders play in maintaining public safety. The Medal of Sacrifice Act stands as a testament to the nation’s gratitude and respect for those who stand between us and danger.
