Medal of Honor recipient Dakota Meyer recently discussed his personal story of heroism and criticized the proposed design of the Global War on Terrorism Memorial in an exclusive interview with the Ruthless Podcast.
A Symbol of Sacrifice
Meyer, who served in the Marines from 2006 to 2010, received the Medal of Honor for entering an area under enemy fire to rescue wounded soldiers and the bodies of fallen service members, saving 36 lives, including 13 Americans.
The proposed memorial, a circular structure with grass on top, is planned to appear on the National Mall in Washington, DC, close to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the proposed spot of the Desert Storm and Desert Shield memorial.
Meyer criticized the design, stating that it does not adequately represent the sacrifices made by service members. He also expressed his disappointment that the design was not created by a veteran who had experienced the sacrifices of war.
A Call to Action
Senators Jim Banks and Mike Lee have also criticized the memorial design, and Rep. Derrick Van Orden has formed a bipartisan and bicameral coalition to prevent the design from being implemented.
Meyer’s comments come after he participated in the UFC Freedom 250 Heavyweight event at the White House, where he walked out with fighter Justin Gaethje.
