Chemeketa Community College is set to stage the musical adaptation of the iconic high school rivalry, Mean Girls, as part of its third annual Chemeketa Theatre Under The Stars performance. The show, which premieres on July 7 at the Gerry Frank Amphitheater in Salem, follows Cady Heron, a teenager who navigates the complexities of high school social hierarchy.
Bringing the Story to Life
The production features a cast of 25 performers, many of whom are in their teens and early-20s, with experience in theatre at Willamette University and regional productions. Director Stephen Munshaw said the show was chosen for its fun and lighthearted tone, which deals with difficult issues in a way that is relatable and entertaining.
The musical will emphasize the relentless social hierarchy of high school using a jungle metaphor, with actors donning elaborate masks to represent different animals. It will also explore the impact of social media on high school life, including cyberbullying, and offer a message of hope and resilience.
Tickets for the show are available, with prices ranging from $17 for children 12 and under to $54 for VIP spots closer to the stage. Audience members can enjoy the show from low-back lawn chairs or blankets on the grass, and concessions will be available during the 15-minute intermission.
