McKinney Advances Key Transportation Projects with Medical Center Drive Expansion

Residents of McKinney, Texas, can expect notable improvements in their city’s transportation infrastructure as several key projects advance. These developments are part of McKinney’s ongoing efforts to enhance roadways and traffic management, ensuring smoother commutes and better connectivity for the community.

East Virginia Street Improvements

The reconstruction of East Virginia Street between Murray Street and Airport Drive is a major project that will introduce a new alignment and connection to Airport Drive. A roundabout is planned at the intersection of the realigned Virginia Parkway and Lively Hill. The design phase is nearly complete, with the project expected to go to bid later this year. Construction is slated to begin in late 2026, with completion anticipated by late 2028. The project is funded by the city of McKinney at a cost of $15 million.

Traffic Signal Installations

New span wire traffic signals are set to be installed at several intersections along SH 5, including Standifer Street, Smith Street, and Enterprise Drive. An additional signal will be installed at SH 5 and Lamar Street as part of the city’s reconstruction efforts along Lamar Street. These installations aim to improve traffic flow and safety, with construction expected to begin in late summer 2026 and completion by early 2027. The project is budgeted at $1.5 million, funded by the city of McKinney.

Permanent traffic signals are also planned for the intersections of Bloomdale Road with Hardin Boulevard and Community Avenue. The design is 60% complete, and construction is expected to start in fall 2026, with the signals operational by early 2027.

Medical Center Drive Expansion

The expansion of Medical Center Drive between Frisco Road and Spur 399 is a significant undertaking that will transform the road into a continuous four-lane divided roadway. Construction is currently underway and approximately 30% complete, with paving of the southbound lanes nearly finished. Traffic is expected to switch to the new pavement within the next one to two months. This project, costing $5.2 million, is funded by the city of McKinney and is scheduled for completion by December 2026.

Utility Relocation for SH 5 Widening

In preparation for the Texas Department of Transportation’s planned reconstruction and widening of SH 5, McKinney is relocating city utilities, including water and wastewater lines. The first phase of this project is actively under construction, with 70% completion achieved. Utility relocations south of Eldorado Parkway are finished, and construction continues at Elm Street, which will remain closed until early August. The project, with a budget of $26.8 million, is funded by the city of McKinney with TxDOT reimbursement.

These projects reflect McKinney’s commitment to improving its transportation infrastructure, enhancing the quality of life for its residents by ensuring safer and more efficient travel throughout the city.
