Mayor‑elect Matt Orr vows to refocus London, Ky. government on core services

London, Ky. – When Matt Orr steps into the mayor’s office this January, he plans to steer the city away from the “entertainment” of recent council disputes and back toward the practical business of governing. Orr, a local realtor and businessman, said the chaotic atmosphere of the past year inspired his candidacy.

Recent turmoil in city council

Over the last twelve months, London City Council meetings have drawn intense public interest, both in‑person and online, as officials grappled with a series of high‑profile controversies. Former Mayor Randall Weddle faced court battles and residency challenges, while lawsuits alleging doxxing added to the tension. A December 2025 council session was forced to halt when the meeting room exceeded capacity, prompting Weddle to announce, “We will have to cancel this meeting and move it upstairs.”

The upheaval continued in March when interim Mayor Tracie Handley dismissed the London Fire Department’s chief and assistant chief. Handley cited policy and training failures, as well as a fire‑alarm incident that disrupted a city meeting, as justification for the firings.

Orr’s vision for a business‑focused administration

“It was never like it is now,” Orr told local reporters. “That’s kind of what spurred me to run, was when my kids started mentioning it to me.” He described the recent drama as a distraction from the city’s core responsibilities.

“That stuff shouldn’t be entertainment,” Orr added. “That’s supposed to be business of the city and what’s best for the people that live in the city, and that’s what I hope to turn it back into.” Orr’s platform centers on restoring a government that prioritizes families, faith‑based values, and individual liberty while delivering essential services efficiently.

Upcoming decisions and council composition

Orr will assume office alongside an entirely new City Council lineup in January. When asked whether he would reinstate the dismissed fire chief and assistant chief, he said he needs time to reassess the situation before making a decision.

He also believes the election results reflect voter frustration and a desire for fresh leadership. “I think that people are looking for people that aren’t just the normal politicians,” Orr said. “I think they feel like they haven’t, a lot of the people out there feel like they haven’t been heard.”

What residents can expect

Orr’s immediate priorities include reviewing city‑wide policies, ensuring council meetings stay within legal capacity limits, and re‑evaluating public‑safety leadership. He emphasized that his administration will work closely with community members, churches, and local businesses to address concerns without turning governance into a spectacle.

“Our focus will be on practical solutions that keep families safe, support local commerce, and respect the constitutional freedoms that make London a great place to live,” Orr said.

As the new mayor‑elect prepares to take office, London residents can anticipate a shift from headline‑making controversies to a steadier, service‑oriented municipal government.
