Massachusetts’ annual sales tax-free holiday weekend concludes on Sunday, offering shoppers a chance to save on most retail items. The Bay State waives its 6.25% sales tax on most items once a year, coinciding with back-to-school shopping. Most retail items priced $2,500 or less are exempt from sales tax, with exclusions including meals, motor vehicles, utilities, tobacco products, marijuana, and alcohol.
Eligible Items and Exclusions
Layaway sales do not qualify for the tax-free holiday. Online orders also qualify for the sales tax holiday exception, even if the retailer is in another state. For large purchases that can’t be taken home the same day, like furniture or appliances, shoppers can still take advantage of the tax-free status as long as they pay for the product in full during the weekend.
Clothing items are generally exempt from the sales tax in Massachusetts, unless the item costs more than $175. On the sales tax holiday, if the price of an item of clothing is less than or equal to $2,500, the entire amount is not subject to tax.
