Commonwealth Fusion Systems, a tech company based in Devens, Massachusetts, is working on a project called the SPARC, a donut-shaped device that aims to achieve fusion, a process that could provide a new source of energy.
Fusion Technology
The SPARC uses strong magnets to combine and compress a ring-shaped plasma, which will undergo fusion, a process where atomic nuclei combine to release energy. This technology has the potential to provide a nearly limitless source of clean energy.
According to cofounder and Chief Science Officer Brandon Sorbom, the SPARC is the first step towards a fusion-fueled future. The company plans to build a larger model called the ARC, which will harness charged particles to generate electricity for the power grid.
A site in Virginia has been chosen for the first fusion power plant, with construction expected to begin soon. Sorbom explained that a global search for a suitable location led to the selection of the Virginia site, which offers the best conditions for the power plant.
