Maddie Shotwell visits her father and grandparents’ graves at Trinity Memorial Gardens in Waldorf, Maryland, every month with her young kids. However, last month, she received a letter from the cemetery stating that the vase on her family’s memorial had been stolen. Upon investigation, it was discovered that both her dad and grandparents’ vases, worth around $900 each, were missing.
Arrests Made
This week, the Charles County sheriff’s office announced the arrest of two suspects, 25-year-old Trey Mason and 34-year-old David Downing, who are facing multiple theft charges. Detectives credited a lucky break in the case, as they caught the suspected thieves in the act of stealing more vases at the cemetery late at night.
The goal of the thieves appeared to be selling the vases to a scrap metal dealer for financial gain. Fortunately, detectives were able to recover about 100 vases before they were melted down. Shotwell plans to attend both suspects’ trials, seeking closure for her family.
