Maryland’s Lieutenant Governor, Aruna Miller, has responded to President Donald Trump’s recent allegations of corruption concerning a mail-in voting error in the state. Trump called for a Justice Department investigation after some Maryland voters received incorrect mail-in ballots ahead of the upcoming primary elections. The error was acknowledged by the Maryland State Board of Elections, which attributed it to a mistake by their mail-in ballot vendor, Taylor Print & Visual Impressions, Inc.
Trump’s Allegations and State Response
President Trump accused Democratic Governor Wes Moore of orchestrating the error to favor Democratic candidates, a claim made via his Truth Social platform. Trump stated, “This was done by the Corrupt Governor of the State, Wes Moore,” suggesting the error was intentional to ensure Democratic victories.
Lt. Gov. Miller, however, clarified that the Maryland State Board of Elections operates independently of the governor’s administration. She characterized such ballot-distribution errors as recurring issues in election administration, stating, “It happens, sometimes. Ballots get mailed the wrong way. It happens almost in every election.” Despite her assertion, there is no publicly available evidence indicating that incorrect mail ballots are a regular occurrence in every election.
Safeguards and Investigation
The state elections board has assured voters that new ballots will be sent to those affected by the error, and emphasized that there is “no risk of duplicate voting” due to existing safeguards. Despite this, Trump has expressed concerns about potential duplicate voting and has requested an investigation by Attorney General Todd Blanche and the Justice Department. As of now, the DOJ has not publicly announced any investigation into the matter.
State Administrator of Elections Jared DeMarinis also refuted Trump’s claim that any “illegal” ballots were distributed, supporting Miller’s stance that the error was not a result of malice or corruption but rather a vendor mistake.
Miller concluded by stating that she has not received any information from the DOJ regarding a potential investigation, but remains open to seeing what any investigation might reveal.
