Maryland awards $11.3 million to improve bike paths and trails statewide

Maryland is set to see a boost in its network of bike lanes, walking trails, and multi‑use paths thanks to a newly announced $11.3 million grant package. The funding, split between $9.3 million in federal assistance and $2 million from the state, targets projects that provide safe, non‑driving transportation options for residents.

Key projects receiving funding

A $6.5 million grant will support six rehabilitation projects, most notably a 20‑mile segment of the historic C&O Canal towpath that runs through Montgomery and Washington counties. The work will improve surface conditions and add amenities for cyclists and pedestrians.

In Baltimore City and the surrounding Anne Arundel and Montgomery counties, $2 million is earmarked for bikeway upgrades, including minor retrofits that will better connect existing paths to major destinations. Crews will also extend routes and link trails in the communities of Edmonston and La Plata.

Montgomery County will benefit from a $2.8 million grant under the Recreational Trails Program. The money will be divided among six projects focused on replacing aging trail bridges, repairing boardwalks, and fixing deteriorated trail sections.

State officials’ perspective

Maryland Department of Transportation Secretary Katie Thomson said the investments will enhance safety, accessibility, and connectivity across the state’s transportation system. “With these newly funded bicycle, pedestrian and trail projects, Marylanders will have more options to commute, exercise and get to school safely and efficiently,” Thomson said in a news release.

She added that expanding the statewide trail network aligns with Maryland’s broader goals of sustainability and providing families with more active‑transport choices.

What this means for residents

The grants are expected to create smoother, safer routes for cyclists, walkers, and runners, encouraging more people to choose active transportation over driving. By linking existing paths and adding new segments, the projects aim to reduce traffic congestion, lower emissions, and promote healthier lifestyles for Maryland families.

Local communities will see construction activity over the coming months as crews begin rehabilitation work, bridge replacements, and trail extensions. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about project timelines and any temporary disruptions.
