Marquette University’s men’s soccer squad opened the evening with several promising chances, but the effort was not enough to overcome No. 25 Xavier at Corcoran Field in Cincinnati. The loss drops the Golden Eagles to a 6-4-1 overall record and leaves them winless in Horizon League play at 0-3-0.
Early chances fell short
Senior forward Mads Konrad Horgoien forced a save in the 13th minute, and Antonio Costabile tested Xavier goalkeeper Jonny Mennell shortly thereafter. Despite controlling much of the early possession and generating the first quality scoring opportunities, Marquette could not convert.
Xavier takes the lead
Gun Ha Lee broke the deadlock in the 29th minute, slipping a shot past Marquette’s defense to give the Musketeers a 1-0 advantage before halftime.
Second‑half goals widen the gap
Early in the second period, Ekene Okeke added a second goal for Xavier in the 51st minute. Ten minutes later, Johnny Gourley finished a chance created by Lee, sealing a 3-0 victory.
Marquette’s response
Freshman midfielder Enkido Hackaa, Emilio Maldonado Frei, and Horgoien each registered shots on target after the break, but Xavier’s keeper Mennell made five saves to preserve the shutout. Marquette’s goalkeeper Cameron Simpson contributed three saves in the second half.
Stat line
Marquette recorded five of its seven shots on goal and held a 6‑5 edge in corner kicks, yet Xavier was more efficient, converting three goals from 14 attempts and six shots on frame.
Looking ahead
The Golden Eagles will return home next week for Senior Night, hosting Carroll University on Tuesday at 6 p.m. CT at Valley Fields. The team hopes to rebound and secure its first league win of the season.
