Marion County driver arrested after returning to hit-and-kill pedestrian on County Road 200A

Marion County, Fla. – A tragic traffic incident on County Road 200A claimed the life of a 29‑year‑old pedestrian early Wednesday morning. Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) reported that the victim was walking along the east shoulder of the road when a silver Ford Explorer traveling northbound struck him just after 8 a.m. near the intersection with NE 110th Street.

Driver fled, then returned to face the law

According to FHP, the driver failed to stop at the scene, a clear violation of Florida’s hit‑and‑run statutes. Approximately one hour after the collision, the driver, identified as 29‑year‑old Matthew Boardman of Marion County, returned to the crash site, admitted his involvement and was promptly arrested.

Charges and next steps

Boardman now faces a charge of leaving the scene of a crash involving death, a serious felony that carries significant penalties under state law. The charge reflects the seriousness with which Florida law enforcement treats any attempt to evade responsibility for a fatal accident.

Community response and law‑enforcement vigilance

Local residents expressed sorrow for the loss of a young life and gratitude for the swift action of the highway patrol. “We rely on our officers to protect our roads and hold reckless drivers accountable,” said a Marion County resident who asked to remain anonymous. The incident underscores the importance of safe pedestrian practices and the need for drivers to remain vigilant, especially on rural roadways where shoulders are often used by walkers and cyclists.

Safety reminders for motorists and pedestrians

Authorities continue to urge motorists to obey traffic laws, reduce speed in residential and rural areas, and always stop when involved in a collision, regardless of perceived fault. Pedestrians are reminded to stay as far from the roadway as possible, use designated walkways when available, and wear high‑visibility clothing, especially during low‑light conditions.

Investigation ongoing

The investigation remains active. FHP will continue to gather evidence, interview witnesses and review vehicle data to fully understand the circumstances leading to the fatal crash. No further details about the victim’s identity have been released pending family notification.

Marion County officials reaffirm their commitment to road safety and will work with state agencies to evaluate whether additional signage or traffic calming measures are needed on County Road 200A. The community is encouraged to report any hazardous conditions or reckless driving they observe to help prevent future tragedies.
