The Marion County Sheriff’s Office has partnered with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to become part of its rapid DNA program, enabling faster crime-solving by cutting DNA analysis turnaround times from hundreds of days to just one.
Rapid DNA Program Details
Taylor Paxton, a forensic DNA technician with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, explained that the program is the first of its kind in the country and can help link crimes more quickly. The previous turnaround time for DNA analysis was 466 days for non-violent crimes and 170 days for violent crimes.
Paxton processed the first pieces of evidence through the new rapid DNA program as part of a burglary investigation and received a call confirming a hit the next morning. A hit means that the sample either matched a person or another unidentified sample in the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS).
