A benches-clearing scrum led to suspensions in Major League Baseball Thursday. Seattle Mariners left-handed reliever Gabe Speier and manager Dan Wilson have been suspended after the league deemed that Speier intentionally beaned Detroit Tigers infielder Gleyber Torres during Wednesday’s game.
Suspensions Handed Down
Speier was docked three games and fined an undisclosed amount, per MLB. Wilson, however, got just one game as well as an undisclosed fine.
The incident occurred in the top of the eighth inning during the Mariners’ 4-2 victory. With two outs and a 1-0 count to Torres, Speier was clearly targeting the right-handed hitter with his next pitch, and he succeeded by hitting him in the leg with a 96-mph fastball.
The altercation seemed to be retaliation for a hit-by-pitch in the frame prior. Mariners star catcher Cal Raleigh was hit right in the stomach area by Tigers reliever Enmanuel De Jesús on a wild pitch that didn’t seem intentional.
