Mariners Reliever Matt Brash Shut Down for Remainder of Season Due to Lat Inflammation

Seattle, WA – The Seattle Mariners announced on Friday that right‑handed reliever Matt Brash will be sidelined for the remainder of the 2026 season. An MRI performed Thursday revealed ongoing inflammation in Brash’s right latissimus dorsi muscle, though no structural damage was found.

Injury timeline and performance

Brash, 28, first entered the 15‑day injured list on May 1 after experiencing lat inflammation. He made a brief return, only to be placed back on the injured list on June 10. The pitcher had been on track to rejoin the roster this month when discomfort resurfaced during a recent bullpen session in Boston.

Despite the setback, Brash’s numbers this season have been impressive. In 20 appearances he posted a minuscule 0.54 earned run average (ERA) and struck out 15 batters over 16 2/3 innings. Over his first four seasons, Brash compiled a 3.06 ERA, eight saves, and 242 strikeouts in 185 1/3 innings across 190 games.

Mariners’ response

General manager Justin Hollander explained the decision, saying, “He will be shut down for eight weeks. So that’s obviously his season. We’re not really sure what’s causing the problem right now. He just needs more rest.” Hollander added that the medical staff observed the lat was not fully healing, even after a gradual throwing progression. “The recommendation was to throw and see how it went, and we were super encouraged until we hit this plateau. So that tells me — and our doctors — that we just need to shut it down and see where we are in eight weeks,” he said.

Impact on the bullpen

Brash’s absence leaves a hole in Seattle’s late‑inning relief corps. The Mariners will need to rely on other arms, such as relievers Luis Castillo and Bryan Woo, to fill the void. Manager Scott Servais praised Brash’s contributions, noting his low ERA and strikeout ability have been vital in tight games.

Brash missed the entire 2024 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery, making his 2026 performance all the more encouraging before the injury halted his progress.

Looking ahead

The Mariners remain optimistic that Brash can return healthy for the 2027 campaign. The organization plans to monitor his rehabilitation closely and will provide updates as his recovery progresses.

Fans are encouraged to continue supporting the team at T-Mobile Park and to keep an eye on the emerging talent stepping up in the bullpen.
