A Marine veteran from Lowell, Massachusetts, has been freed from a Russian prison and is now back on U.S. soil. Robert Gilman, 32, was released after four years and is currently recovering at a hospital in Texas with his family.
Recovery Ahead
According to Dr. Alice Connors-Kellgren, the director of psychology at Tufts Medical Center, Gilman will likely face a very long road to recovery. "Our bodies and our brains adapt to traumatic environments, and he’s been in this environment for four years," she said. Gilman’s doctors are focused on both his physical and psychological health, including potential flashbacks, nightmares, and changes in mood.
Gilman was detained in 2022 and accused of beating a police officer. He recently fell into an unresponsive state and was near death due to the abuse he suffered while in prison. While recovery is possible, it may take years, and Gilman may be dealing with different aspects of his experience for the rest of his life.
