Manchester survivor recounts 9/11 North Tower escape and the power of family

When American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower on September 11, 2001, Jeff Benjamin was on the 83rd floor conducting an audit for Swiss Re America. The 39‑year‑old Manchester, New Hampshire, resident recalls the terrifying moments that followed and how a fire captain’s guidance led him and his client to safety.

Seeing the impact

Benjamin described watching the plane approach, “I could see into the cockpit… you could make out the insignia.” The aircraft hit at 8:46 a.m., sending debris raining down and trapping dozens above the impact zone. “We heard what sounded like a gunshot, a loud bang, and we all immediately went down, fell to the floor,” he said.

Escaping the tower

After the crash, Benjamin and his coworkers fled their conference room, spotting a fireball and a flash of light. He called 911, receiving confirmation that rescue teams knew their location. A fire captain appeared, leading the group toward a stairwell that accessed the 78th‑floor sky lobby. “We were stepping over bodies,” Benjamin recalled, describing the harrowing scene.

At 9:59 a.m., the South Tower collapsed, sending a rush of debris up the stairwell. Benjamin and his client, a fellow auditor named Fred, pressed on, eventually emerging onto the street where a police officer directed them toward the Hudson River.

Reaching safety

Benjamin described the streets as a “war zone” as the North Tower began its own collapse at 10:28 a.m. He and Fred made it to a ferry in Hoboken, New Jersey, and then to Union Station, where he was able to notify his wife and two young children that he was safe. The next day he returned home to New Hampshire, arriving just as his children were stepping off the school bus.

What the experience taught him

Now 64, Benjamin says the tragedy reinforced the importance of family, faith, and community. He keeps a key card, a trip itinerary and a New York City Fire Department hat from that day as reminders of the heroes who saved his life. “These are my heroes, the Fire Department and the Police Department in New York,” he said.

Benjamin’s story underscores how ordinary citizens, guided by brave first‑responders, can survive even the most catastrophic events. It also highlights the lasting gratitude many families feel toward those who risked everything on that fateful morning.
