Manatee County Unites to Restore Historic Old Memphis Cemetery

The community of Palmetto, Florida, has come together to address the recent vandalism at the historic Old Memphis Cemetery. This site, which holds the graves of World War II veterans, community leaders, and significant figures in Manatee County’s African American history, was found with 17 graves vandalized, including broken headstones and exposed vaults.

Community Response and Restoration Efforts

Local leaders and residents have rallied to restore and protect the cemetery. Manatee County commissioners have allocated up to $100,000 to install protective fencing and security cameras. Commissioner Amanda Ballard emphasized the importance of community support in focusing on security and future restoration efforts.

Businesses in the area are also contributing to the restoration. Brown’s Funeral Home is working to remove spray paint from the graves, while Christopher Mullinex Senior, part owner of Gilcom Materials and Gilliam Construction, is partnering with Florida Vault to repair the exposed concrete lids at no cost. Mullinex expressed the importance of honoring and respecting those buried there, stating, “At the end of the day, we’re all God’s children.”

Historical Significance and Maintenance

The cemetery, declared abandoned in the late 1980s, has been maintained by the county since then. A motion was approved to expand county-funded cleanups and ongoing maintenance. The cemetery’s historical marker highlights its significance to Palmetto’s Memphis neighborhood, particularly for the African American community.

Community Involvement and Future Plans

Volunteers are actively participating in the restoration efforts, with plans to meet and assemble cemetery cones filled with flowers for each grave. A broader community cleanup is scheduled for Saturday at 9 a.m. However, Tracey Washington, president of Manatee County’s NAACP, stresses the need for long-term accountability and protection beyond the immediate efforts.

While the community’s response has been strong, questions remain about who is responsible for the vandalism and how soon the new security measures will be implemented. The community’s commitment to preserving this historical site reflects a broader dedication to honoring the past and ensuring respect for all individuals.
