The community of Palmetto, Florida, has come together to address the recent vandalism at the historic Old Memphis Cemetery. This site, which holds the graves of World War II veterans, community leaders, and significant figures in Manatee County’s African American history, was found with 17 graves vandalized, including broken headstones and exposed vaults.

Mullinex expressed the importance of honoring and respecting those buried there, stating, “At the end of the day, we’re all God’s children.”

The cemetery, declared abandoned in the late 1980s, has been maintained by the county since then. A motion was approved to expand county-funded cleanups and ongoing maintenance. Volunteers are actively participating in the restoration efforts, with plans to meet and assemble cemetery cones filled with flowers for each grave. A broader community cleanup is scheduled for Saturday at 9 a.m. However, Tracey Washington, president of Manatee County’s NAACP, stresses the need for long-term accountability and protection beyond the immediate efforts.
