A 40-year-old man from Orkney, Scotland, suffered serious burns to his leg after a vape battery exploded in his pocket while he was at work. Gavin Sutherland had a spare charged lithium battery in his jeans pocket when he heard a hissing sound, followed by a sudden blast that sent burning pain through his leg.
The battery had exploded, causing serious burns and melting the fabric of his jeans and underwear into his skin. Sutherland said he was in extreme pain and his coworkers helped him place a burns gel pack on his leg and drove him to the hospital.
Treatment and Recovery
Sutherland was taken to Balfour Hospital in Kirkwall, where he received initial treatment. He was later transferred to a specialist burns and plastics unit at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, where he underwent skin grafting to help heal his wound.
Fortunately, there was no muscle damage, and Sutherland is confident of a full recovery, albeit with permanent scarring. The Scottish Charity Air Ambulance (SCAA) was called in to ensure a fast and comfortable journey to the hospital, and Sutherland praised the crew for their professionalism and care.
Sutherland’s 9-year-old son, Caleb, and his friend staged a 20-mile sponsored cycle to raise money for the SCAA, raising nearly $9,000 in support of the charity.
