Man shot by officers, hospitalized after fleeing traffic stop and PIT maneuver

Officials in Johnson County, Texas, say deputies and Texas Department of Public Safety troopers chased and stopped a man Saturday after a BOLO for multiple outstanding warrants and reported threats to shoot at officers rather than return to custody; the suspect crashed after a PIT maneuver, “produced” a firearm during arrest attempts and was shot by law enforcement before being taken to a local hospital, while all involved officers escaped injury and the matter remains under active investigation.

The sequence began when the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office put out a BOLO after it was reported a man had several outstanding warrants. Authorities also received information alleging the suspect had made statements indicating he preferred a shootout with law enforcement over going back to prison. That warning prompted heightened attention from nearby agencies.

Troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety later located the vehicle and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. Rather than comply, the driver fled, and the situation quickly escalated into a pursuit. Johnson County deputies joined the effort to intercept the vehicle and bring the chase to an end.

Officers used a pursuit intervention technique to stop the fleeing car, executing a PIT maneuver that forced the vehicle off the road and into a crash. The move was intended to end the danger of a high-speed pursuit and prevent harm to the public. After the crash, officers moved in to detain the driver and secure the scene.

During the arrest attempts, the man “produced” a gun, according to statements released by law enforcement. Shots were fired by officers and the suspect was struck. The circumstances that led individual officers to use deadly force are part of the ongoing investigative process.

The wounded man was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment, and officials have not released his current medical condition. Hospital privacy rules limit what can be shared publicly about patients, so details about his injuries and prognosis have not been made available. Family notifications and further medical updates may come through official channels when appropriate.

All law enforcement personnel who took part in the incident were reported to be uninjured. Agencies involved have standard procedures that include administrative notifications and medical checks any time officers discharge a weapon or are involved in a high-risk stop. Those routine steps were taken while detectives began collecting evidence at the scene.

The shooting and pursuit remain an active investigation, and investigators will review body camera footage, dash cam video, radio traffic and witness statements. Forensic teams typically process the crash site, the vehicle and any recovered weapons to piece together the sequence of events. Independent review and internal affairs protocols often follow such incidents to address policy compliance and transparency.

Neighbors and passersby to the crash scene were temporarily displaced by the police response and traffic was likely disrupted while the scene was secured. Officials asked the public to avoid the area until investigators cleared the site and released a formal statement. Anyone with information or footage of the pursuit or the crash was encouraged to contact authorities to help build a complete picture of what happened that day.
