Man points rifle at employees in Orlando supermarket, arrested

Orlando police released details on Thursday about a disturbing incident that unfolded inside a local supermarket. Surveillance footage shows a 44‑year‑old man, identified as Juby Vera, walking through the store and stopping in the jewelry aisle. He lifted a rifle and pointed it at several employees, prompting panic among shoppers.

Witness accounts

One shopper initially believed Vera might be a security guard, but quickly realized the situation was far more serious when she saw the weapon being aimed. “I saw that she bent down and the lady next door left. She ran away,” the shopper recounted. “He was acting as if he was cocking it.”

Police response

Authorities arrived at the scene shortly after the incident was reported. Vera left the store before officers could engage him, but an arrest report indicates he was later taken into custody. During questioning, Vera told officers the gun was not real. However, a witness told police that the firearm was indeed real and contained two bullets.

Charges

Vera now faces several charges related to the incident, though the specific counts were not disclosed in the initial report. The Orlando Police Department emphasized that any threat involving a firearm, real or perceived, is taken seriously and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Community reaction

Customers expressed shock and concern over the event, noting that the supermarket is a routine destination for families and everyday shoppers. The incident underscores ongoing worries about gun safety and the importance of swift law‑enforcement response in public spaces.

Safety measures

Police officials reminded the public that anyone who sees a potential threat should immediately alert store personnel or call 911. They also encouraged shoppers to remain calm and follow instructions from law‑enforcement officers during such emergencies.

The investigation remains ongoing, and additional details will be released as they become available.
