Maine Democratic Senate nominee Graham Platner announced he is suspending his campaign, allowing Democrats to select a new candidate to challenge Republican Sen. Susan Collins in the November election.
Allegations and Controversy
Platner’s decision comes after a woman alleged he raped her while they were in a casual dating relationship nearly five years ago. Platner denies the allegations, stating they are “troubling, serious and false”.
Platner faced a July 13 deadline to withdraw from the ballot, and the state Democratic Party will now have two weeks to put forward a replacement candidate. Potential candidates include Nirav Shah, Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, and former state Sen. Troy Jackson.
Platner’s campaign has been marred by controversy, including a skull and crossbones chest tattoo with Nazi associations, which he claimed he was unaware of until recently. He has also faced allegations of unsettling behavior toward women he dated.
Impact on the Election
The Maine Senate race is critical to Democrats’ hopes of winning a Senate majority in November’s midterm elections. The party needs a net gain of four seats, most of which would have to come from wins in red states.
While well-funded Democrats have fallen short against Collins in previous contests, Democrats believe a favorable national environment could buoy their chances this year in a state that former Vice President Kamala Harris won by nearly 7 percentage points in 2024.
